The help section is simple to navigate so you can find the answers you’re looking for. Every screen provides a help link and through the home page, you can find unlimited information like FAQs, technical support, tips, user forums and much more. They also offer “video training” on CD for purchase.

Organization Tools
They have a Research Guidance tool that helps you stay organized, on task and pointed in the right direction. The Research Guidance tool first presents an ancestor’s timeline, this view can help you review the information you have gathered and compare their lifespan with historical events. The second tool runs a preliminary survey of sources to check if other researchers have already researched your topic. The third tool suggests possible sources where you might find the information you are looking for. It will even tell you which sources are free and which ones require a fee or membership. Lastly, it presents a to–do list.

To stay up–to–date and in touch with other researches they have a “home” section. On this new home page you can find news, update links, technical support and it has a built–in browser. This page can be customized to display your to–do lists, statistics about your family as well as birthday and anniversary reminders. Please note that to use this feature and many of Legacy’s other features your computer has to be connected to the Internet.

Search Tools
To make gathering information easier Legacy can import from GEDCOM, PAF (Personal Ancestral Files) plus many non–standard sources. It also has the ability to export to these sources making it easy to share your research with other genealogists.

Legacy also offers a geographic–based search feature that allows you to search for a location by city, county, state, province, or country. Legacy has available a master file of place names you can view and automatically update. Currently, they offer over three million locations in six regions, including the Pacific Islands, the United States, Africa, US Territories, Asia and Europe.

For those that are not computer savvy or if you want to be able to collect information on the go, they have downloadable and printable forms. You can simply fill them in and add them to your legacy database later, or print them and give them to relatives so they can fill in the information they know.

Verification Tools
The software will produce a “potential problems” report in a grid form that is retained from session to session that highlights inconsistent information. Also, if you import collaborative databases the formatting might be inconsistent; you can easily check formatting with Legacy and then make all your records uniform. If you have unlinked individuals from imported records, you can examine them and then choose to either link or delete these. There are several other fields you can double check to verify that the database information meets your standards.

Legacy’s US County Verifier is a useful feature for those researching ancestry in the USA. This feature will automatically let you know if there is a county discrepancy, like if a county is referenced with a date that predates the counties formation.

Publishing Tools
Legacy includes the capacity to create beautiful, custom web pages to share your work worldwide. The software can produce over a hundred customized reports and can translate your output into several languages–which can help you share data with people who are not native English speakers. The media software included in Legacy is sophisticated yet simple to use. This will allow you to easily include photos, sound, even slide shows, making your output options remarkably diverse.

In the Publishing Center, you can create book reports with selected reports. This feature enables you to select the reports you want to be included and then it will automatically create a table of contents, index of names, preface page and more.

If reports are generated to an RTF file, you can embed images into the file that will automatically display when you import it into Word. Additionally, multi page TIF files are supported so that one TIF file can include many images instead of just one.
