.Birth, Marriage, and Death Records Search Tips

  • There are three basic types of birth certificates: A) original; B) amended; and C) delayed. "Delayed" records are not considered primary records of birth because they were often issued years after the fact, usually when an original certificate was not filed, and when an individual needed to secure a passport, or retirement benefits from Social Security. There are numerous documents required for receiving a delayed certificate, and those given are listed on the certificate itself. For genealogy purposes, those documents should be sought out as the primary records of birth.
  • Marriage certificates are obviously the best primary source for marriage information, but they are also excellent secondary sources for other pieces of information, such as the ages of the bride and groom, the parents' names, and the names of other family members who may have acted as witnesses.
    * For additional help in finding marriage dates, try searching through court records, church records, newspapers, family papers and bibles, periodical databases, and even the U.S. census.
  • As with marriage certificates, death certificates can provide both primary and secondary information, including names of parents and spouses. Since personal information can clearly not be provided directly by the deceased, pay particular information to the name and address of the individual who filled out the documentation.
  • Some helpful sources for finding burial site information are obituaries, wills, death certificates, church records, and family interviews. For finding particular tombstones, check any available cemetery records, mass or prayer cards, family Bibles, and published cemetery surveys.
  • Remember that modern vital records are kept by the state, but older records were often archived at the county level, if at all. For a variety of reasons, many people simply did not care to officially report births and deaths to the government, so some information can only be found through church baptismal, christening, or funeral records. Also, an excellent secondary source for information regarding marriages are church periodicals that published marriage banns—the announcements made by churches in advance of a ceremony, providing notice to those who might have reason to protest.
